8 Reasons to Be Thankful This Holiday Season

Feeling down this holiday season because of your financial situation?  Below are some worldwide statistics that may give you a different perspective, make you feel fortunate financially when it comes to your standard of living, appreciate what you have, and cheer you up (Source: Money and Happiness)

1.  More than 3 billion people (about half the world’s population) in the world live on less than $2.50 a day!

2.  1.2 billion people do not have access to a reliable water source that is not contaminated.

3.  More than 1 billion people (about 1/6 of the world’s population) are faced with chronic hunger.

4.  More than 70 million children of primary school age in the developing world were not enrolled in school in 2005 and this number has probably only become worse.

5.  Close to 1 billion people are illiterate and unable to read a book or sign their names.

6.  The average worldwide life expectancy is about 65 years, but just 46 years in sub-Saharan Africa.

7.  More than 10 million children die each year in the developing world, often due to reasons that could have been prevented such as a lack of good care, nutrition, and medical treatment.

8.  There are more than 10.5 million refugees who have been displaced or sought protection in another country.

If you have a roof over your head, food to eat, clean water to drink, make more than $2.50 per day, and can read, you are doing better than the majority of the world’s population.  In other words, chances are, if you are reading this article, you are doing just fine financially.  Have a happy holiday.
